Thing a Day 12

Butterquack falls into some lightning sand.

Westley grabs onto a vine and dives in after her.

They emerge from the sand.

Butterquack: We’ll never succeed. We may as well die here.

Westley: No, no. We have already succeeded. I mean, what are the three terrors of the Fire Swamp? One, the flame spurt. No problem. There’s a popping sound preceding each; we can avoid that. Two, the lightning sand, but you were clever enough to discover what that looks like, so in the future we can avoid that too.

Butterquack: Westley, what about the R.O.U.S.s?

Westley: Rodents of Unusual Size? I don’t think they exist.

He is promptly attacked by one.

He fights the R.O.U.S. It bites his wing. He hears the popping sound signalling a flame spurt and uses it to catch the rodent on fire.

He stabs the R.O.U.S. He and Butterquack make their escape.

  1. Thanks to my cat Rex for supplying the R.O.U.S.s.

  2. Susan

HA! (Love the sinking down the drain – did you think the bathtub would yield so many great locations?)

  3. Thanks! They’re rubber ducks, so there really isn’t anywhere else the story could take place other than a bathtub. I got the idea when I was taking a bath and looked up and the walls reminded me of the Cliffs of Insanity. It just went from there.
