3: Monster Hats

My middle son wanted a hat, so I made him one. The story goes like this:

Once there was an eleven-year old boy with a flair for the dramatic.  As the winter days worn on, he became tired of his grey and black hat. He longed for something bright and exciting to cheer up the dull gray days. Also, he wanted to be WARM.

“Mom, I want a hat that keeps my nose warm. And has teeth.”

“What color should it be, my son?”

“Orange! And it should have eyes.”

“What color should the eyes be, my son?”

“Blue! And they should be looking down at me.”

So his mother, who was both crafty and indulgent, went to the store and bought a 1/2 yard of warm orangey-rust fleece. She cut and sewed and cut and sewed, and saw that it was WARM. And had teeth. And had blue eyes. And was a fairly excellent solution to dull gray days. And she was well pleased.

Then the younger son saw the hat and said “Mama, I need a monster hat TOO!”

“What color should it be, my son?”

“Blue! And it should have eyes.”

“What color should the eyes be, my son?”

“Pink! And they should be looking sideways. And it should have ears.”

So his mother, who as you recall was both crafty and indulgent, went to the scrap bag and pulled out some dark blue fleece and some bright pink fleece. She folded and sewed and cut and sewed, and saw that it was WARM. And had pink eyes. And had ears. And was cute as all get out.

And the boys and the mom were all happy for the rest of the day, which is all anyone can ask for, really.

(I’m traveling this weekend, so this might have to count for thing 4 as well.)
